Fairy Tales Foods The Princess and the Pea

All the rain and storms we've been getting along with our garden peas being ready (and very yummy, I might add!), have me thinking of The Princess and the Pea.

I'm not sure I would make a long-lasting committment to someone just because that person could feel a pea under 20 mattresses but hey, I choose not to judge.😄
For The Princess and the Pea study, we made beds.

The mattresses can be made of cake or sandwiches (we used rice krispie treats), and the bed frames can be made from crackers or pastries (we used Pop
Tarts).

Fairy Tales Food Fairy Tales

The royal wedding was Saturday. A chance for us commoners to ooh and aah at the lovely dresses and the adorable flower girls and page boys. A chance to believe that fairy tales do come true.

Most fairy tales involve castles and towers so for our Fairy Tales study, we made Fairy Tales Towers.

Quite simple activity.
Fill the ice cream cone with cake (I used a rice krispie treat since I had extra),

decorate the sugar cone,

then assemble the sugar cone atop the ice cream cone.

TIP: have the kids paint their sugar cone whatever color they want. The different-colored towers are lovely when viewed together.

Fairy Tales Foods Beauty and the Beast

It's ark-building time! We've had SO much rain this past week: roads collapsing, rivers flooding, mudslides, UGH! But, we did get a break from precip this morning, so I ran outside to snap a picture of my rose bush. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Beauty-and-the-Beast-Activities-818108

A bush full of roses? I know what you're thinking – Beauty and the Beast.
Whether you fancy the original animated version or the 2017 movie, Beauty and the Beast conveys such good life lessons.
Top 3?
1. Willingness to sacrifice yourself for another is true love.
2. What is on the inside is what counts.
3. Criticism should never belittle one's self-worth.

So, back to roses . . .
Beauty and the Beast Roses
I do not do well with cake pops, so I enlisted the help of my eldest daughter for this project. She made the cake pops effortlessly; getting them to stand up in the cones, however, was another issue.
Make your cake pops, swirl them in melted candy melts and sprinkle with pink/red candy dust to make them rose-like, then insert their sticks into the cones filled with cupcakes. And PLOP! they fall over. Too top heavy. So, the obvious tip is:
TIP: Make sure you have a heavy-enough base cone in order for the cake pop rose to keep upright. Use a foam floral block covered with chocolate crumbs as long as the kids know not to eat that base.

Fairy Tales Foods The Frog Prince

Springtime is a great time to study frogs, their life cycle, and how they are really princes under spells.

For The Frog Prince fairy tale, we made frogs.

Brush melted candy melts onto your nutter butter cookie.

Then decorate the face with candy eyes and edible pen (or mini chocolate chips).

Totally simple.

Dare I say fool-proof?

Tip: place candy eyes on nutter butter cookie while candy is still wet but wait to draw the mouth until the candy is dry.

Fairy Tales Foods Little Red Riding Hood

FAIRY TALES FOODS

Need quick, simple, kid-friendly snacks and treats to make and munch on while studying your Fairy Tales?

We did, so I grabbed my old folder of ideas, pinned new ideas, bought ingredients/materials and had a trial run.

Trial run?

Yes, trial run.

In case I needed to scream sigh with frustration I needed to be alone in my own kitchen.

Some people are creatively handy enough to create Pinterest-y crafts.

(Don't you hate those people?!).
Me? Not so much.

The next few posts are not so much step-by-step tutorials of a food blogger, but more a compilation of kid-friendly snacks to make and munch on while studying your favorite fairy tales. You will get the gist of the food idea along with some tips.

PLUS, each fairy tale will include a FREE download of a food label card. (I also bundled these cards and have them for sale in my store.). Click here for that.

It's springtime here – the birds are singing and the flowers are blooming. I like to picture Little Red Riding Hood strolling along and humming while picking flowers for her grandmother. In Red's basket of goodies she might have Cherry Tarts.
These tarts were quite easy to make. Online, there are many recipes to make your own pie pastry - Puhlease. Who has time for that?? Go to the store and buy refrigerated pie crusts. While there, pick up some pie filling. We like cherry but any variety works.

Roll out the dough, cut circles with a round cookie cutter, place circles into a cupcake pan, and fill with pie filling.

Tarts can be latticed on top with pastry strips or covered with smaller circles of pastry.

Some tarts will look better than others. As long as your kids are having fun, who cares?!

Tip: Make sure your pastry circle is snug along the bottom and side of your cupcake pan cup.

Of course, we cannot forget the wolf.

Make cupcakes. Once again, I went the lazy way and used boxed mix and ready-to-use frosting.

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Little-Red-Riding-Hood-Activities-818130

I do not have decorating essentials, no tips or bags. So, I used a storage baggie and snipped the corner. Actually, my daughter handled the decorating. With the baggie of icing, she made swooshes pulled up and away with the baggie tip on top of the cupcake leaving space for the wolf's mouth.

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Little-Red-Riding-Hood-Activities-818130

Then she cut a piece of fruit roll-up to mash down into the cupcake and with a baggie of white frosting, made tiny dots for the wolf's teeth. M & Ms were used for the eyes and nose. Quite simple - with Emily doing the decorating, that is.

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Little-Red-Riding-Hood-Activities-818130

Tip: Remind kids to not cover the entire cupcake with frosting, so they will have room to place the roll-up for the mouth. They may even want to pinch (and eat!) a bit of the cupcake to make an indentation for the mouth.
